Dick was a member of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, where he served as elder. Funeral arrangements were widely publicized throughout Michael Saunders and Company, and when I attended the service today, I understood why. Several people spoke about how he helped them get back on their feet by getting them into their homes. Former Broker of Byrd Realty in Sarasota, he was also known to help new struggling businesses through his network of friends and connections in the community. Dick suffered with health issues since I met him over a year ago, and when I would see him at church, he got a hug and I got a quick health update. Not sure he knew I was a realtor, but I sadly was unaware of his real estate background and impact on this community. So sad today that I did not spend the time getting to know him better but I am always rushing off to do Open Houses after church each week. Dick Byrd was born June 10, 1929 in Cooper, WV and was raised in Bluefield, WV. He served in the U.S. Navy; managed a J.C. Penney Co. store; and owned and operated the Tiki Bowling Lanes in Lancaster, OH. He retired to Sarasota in '79. Today, he's in a much better place but will be truly missed. In today’s world, we are all so busy but I will make a better effort to get to know people I see regularly. There’s so much to be learned just by taking the time to stop and listen. Linda
